Question

Answer

Starting a query

Click the search query bar that says 'click here to start building your query…'

Searching for a single term

Type the term you're looking for in the term entry bar (e.g. vaccine)

Searching for multiple terms

Ensure the group you're searching for has the correct logic (e.g. AND/OR) and then type the term(s) you're looking for separated by commas or submit a term by hitting enter

Excluding terms

You can exclude terms at the query, group or subgroup level. Just click the 'add exclude' option at the relevant point and add your exclude terms

Grouping logic together

You can add groups or subgroups. Groups will add another clause to the query whereas subgroups allow you to add more

Labelling groups

You can label groups to make it easier to read your query without having to read every single term in the query. To label a group, just select the tag next to the 'add label' option and create a name. You will still be able to see all the terms in your labelled group when you look at the builder.

Searching for a literal term

Type the full term before moving onto the next keyword. You don't need to use quotes but if you do enter quotes, the system will automatically convert this into a literal term query

Specify a token type to search against

You are able to select from available token types (additional fields in the data) from the token type selector menu next to the term entry bar. Once selected, you will see what your available options are.

Proximity searching

To specify a proximity search, type your terms in the term entry bar and before you submit them, use the icon to the right of the term entry bar. Clicking on this will allow you to specify the number of words that can appear between these terms. E.g. hello world with the proximity search enabled will allow hello and world to appear no more than 5 words apart

Prefix searching

To specify a prefix search, type your terms in the term entry bar and before you submit them, use the icon to the right of the term entry bar. Clicking on this will allow you to attach a prefix search to your term. E.g. adding this to corona would return everything that matches after this stem of the word e.g. corona, coronavirus, coronaviruses, etc...
